Sinead O'Connor Ends 16 Days of Marriage, Blames Intense Pressure Put on Husband

'I saw his life leave him because of how people close to him reacted. And I can't take anyone's life,' explains the 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer when announcing her separation from fourth husband.Like12
Sinead O'Connor has parted ways with therapist husband Barry Herridge after just 16 days of marriage. The 45-year-old singer took to her blog Monday, December 26 to explain that the marriage went wrong three hours after they tied the knot in Las Vegas on December 8 and blame pressures placed upon her fourth husband by"certain people in his life" for the separation.
"I had for reasons u will all understand, wished to keep this private but have been told today it is to be leaked inthe next few days despite my best efforts," she began her blog post. "So I must now leakit myself so as the record is straight. I won't under any circumstances ever have any further comments to make on this matter than those I write here this evening."
The "Nothing Compares 2 U" hitmaker then wrote, "From the moment myself and my husband got together not longago, there was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me." She elaborated, "These were people who had never met mebut had formed opinions of mebased on what they read about 'Sinead 'O'Connor' in themedia etc."
"Within 3 hours of the ceremony being over the marriage was kyboshed by the behavior of certain peoplein my husband's life," she continued. "And also by a bit of a wild ride i took us on looking for a bit of a smoke ofweed for me wedding night as I don't drink. My husband was enormously wounded and very badly effected by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage."
"It became apparent to me that if he were to stay with mehe would be losing too much to bear. And that being with me was not going to serve him positively, career wise or any other wise. I saw his life leave him because of how people close to him reacted. And I can't take anyone's life. And a woman wants to be a joy to her husband. So.. U love someone? Set them free."
"We part amicably," the Irish singer stressed. "I wish him to be free and happy and loved and supported and for him to have privacy as that is utmost important for his job and for the children he treats as a therapist so I plead on theirs and his behalf for media to please leave him andhis family alone."
"Meanwhile I intend to get on with being fully me," she noted near the end of her post. "The marriage was 16 days. We lived together for 7 days only.. Until Xmas eve. And we haven't been awful to each other. So while I feel sad for my husband, and sad to be the cause of sorrow to yetanother poor man, I'm also happy that I know we weren't horrible to each other and he is better off free."
O'Connor exchanged vows with Herridge in the back of a pink Cadillac at A Little White Wedding Chapel on December 8. It was her fourth marriage. She was previously married to music producer John Reynolds, journalist Nicholas Sommerlad and musician SteveCooney.

Matt Hammitt Wishes to Empower Others by Sharing Family Struggle in Album

The Sanctus Real lead singer shares the story of his unborn baby not only to help him and his family find peace in the toughest moment but also to console others going through the similar situation. Matt Hammitt has shared storybehind his solo album "Every Falling Tear" in hopes to spread strength to people who are struggling during the hardest of times like he and his family once went through. To the Associated Press, he said that the album is a story about his unborn son who"had only half a heart and little chance to survive."
The lead singer of Grammy-nominated Sanctus Real initially wrote the songs to console his family while they tried to understand that the pain they suffered "has a purpose." He, however, soon realized many people out there dealt with the same ordeal, so he shared what he was feeling during those tough moments in an album to let them know that they're notalone.
"That's the biggest part of sharing our story," Matt said."That there is a purpose." Talking about the"storywriting" process, he added, "I began writing about all that I was learning about struggle and faith. ... I wanted to write songs that would speak him someday about howmuch his father loved him no matter how long or short his life would be."
Matt and his wife, Sarah, found out something was wrong with their unborn baby when they saw the sorrow on their doctor's face during an ultrasound checkup. It broke their hearts when the doctor told them the baby had a rarecongenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. They then"contemplated all of the possible procedures and treatments while weighing the odds of what could go wrong."
The baby, named Bowen Matthew Hammitt, was later born in September 2010, and the weeks that followed were filled with surgeries and life-threatening complications. In order to ease the pain theyknew the baby was suffering, they played demos of the songs to the tot. "They felt it was good for all the babies tobe soothed," Sarah said before adding, "so Bowen could hear his dad's voice."

Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black Rule Google's 2011 Top Search Lists

Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black Rule Google's 2011 Top Search Lists
One more look-back at the past twelve months before the 2011 curtain is pulled down is revealed. This time around, it's provided by Google in a form of "Zeitgeist" lists which see two young music stars Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black, who both claimed their fame through YouTube, ruling two of the top-10 compilations.

Showing the most-searched terms typed by people from around the world, the list puts Bieber as the most popular person this year. The 17-year-old singer beats Kim Kardashian, Lady GaGa and Nicki Minaj who are ranked second, third and fourth respectively on the "Most-Searched People" list.

The Canadian singer undoubtedly comes out on top due to the buzzing news of his new albums, "Under the Mistletoe" and "Believe", his then-ongoing tour, and his baby drama with Mariah Yeater. Even some of the mundane news about him being out and about also seemed to attract online readers.

Bieber's girlfriend, Selena Gomez, claims the sixth place behind Casey Anthony. Throughout the year, she repeatedly appeared on the front page of Google due to the release of her album "When the Sun Goes Down", her tour, and health scare. Her relationship with the "Baby" hitmaker and her hosting gigs at some major events also got wide coverage on the web.

Elsewhere on the "Fastest Rising People" list, Black shines brighter than everyone else, but it might be for the wrong reasons. Her "Friday" music video which went viral in late 2010 but continued to become a target of mockery in the following months, and her next singles which flopped, might have put her on the first position. She beats "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery and teen bride Courtney Stodden on the list.

Most Searched People:
  1. Justin Bieber
  2. Kim Kardashian
  3. Lady GaGa
  4. Nicki Minaj

After avoiding elimination for three weeks in a row, Marcus Canty finally has to bid goodbye to "The X Factor (US)". The 20-year-old singer got voted off from the show on Thursday, December 15 night, but when speaking to reporters backstage, he was nothing but relieved.
Marcus Canty

"I didn't win it, but I feel like a million dollars right now," Canty said. "Honestly, I've been trying to keep it positive this whole time. But I'm going to keep it real - the pressure is off. I don't have to sing no more save me's. I don't got to worry about America shooting me down. I ain't got to worry about Simon [Cowell] giving me heat. I can just relax."

Canty also remained positive when speaking further about judge Simon Cowell. "Out in the back, [Simon] said, 'Man, you're amazing.' I'm trying to do whatever." Though so, he will still keep his eyes on his music. "I'm R&B, I'm going to stay R&B," he said, "and I'm going to take it to the top."

New Images and Official Character Details of 'Amazing Spider-Man' Unleashed

Marvel Studios has launched the official website for "The Amazing Spider-Man". Along with it, the studio unleashed several brand new images of the highly anticipated superhero flick as well as revealed more details of the plot and the key characters.
Andrew Garfield

There are some fresh photos that see Peter Parker wearing his casual jacket, with one picture featuring him talking to his girlfriend Gwen Stacy at the school corridor. In other stills, the lead character is seen embracing his alter ego and getting into action complete with his full costume.

In the official character details, Peter Parker is described as a young man who struggles to find his purpose in life since his parents were gone 13 years ago. On the brink of unlocking the mystery about what happened to them, he must face the ultimate challenge, one that has been created within the laboratories of Oscorp.

His girlfriend Gwen, meanwhile, is featured as a "smart, charismatic and rebellious" girl who is also Oscorp's chief intern, a position she takes very seriously. However, her life takes a complicated turn as she watches both her boyfriend Peter and her mentor Dr. Connor undergo radical transformations.

The supervillain, Dr. Connors a.k.a The Lizard, is said as "one of the leading scientific minds" who attempts to engineer a revolutionary regeneration serum to help re-grow limbs and human tissue. His motivation, however, is unclear as to why he elects to be the first human test subject, but what becomes evident is that something goes horribly wrong.

Additionally, Gwen's father, Captain Stacy, is described as "an esteemed police officer for over twenty years." He is the public face of the NYPD who leads the department's investigation into Spider-Man's vigilantism. The only thing Captain Stacy vows to protect more than the city is his family and particularly his only daughter, Gwen.

To arrive in the U.S. theaters on July 3, 2012, "The Amazing Spider-Man" puts its focus on Peter. Like most teenagers his age, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret that his father held. The secret will ultimately shape his destiny as Spider-Man.

Tackling the directorial duty is Marc Webb with James Vanderbilt penning the script. Andrew Garfield plays Peter a.k.a Spider-Man, Emma Stone portrays Gwen, Rhys Ifans stars as Dr. Connor a.k.a The Lizard, and Denis Leary tackles the part of Captain Stacy.

Earthquake at Club World Cup in Japan

Players at the Club World Cup in Japan paid tribute Sunday to those who lost their lives and livelihoods in the March earthquake that left 20,000 dead or missing, nine months on from the disaster.
Earthquake at Club World Cup in Japan

Santos striker Borges had a prolific stint with Vegalta Sendai in 2006 -- a club based in the northeast part of Japan that was hardest hit by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami on March 11 this year.

"The way the Japanese people have reacted to such terrible natural tragedies this year just showcases what kind of country this is," Borges, whose side enters the semi-final stage of the Club World Cup on Wednesday, told FIFA.com.

The disaster also sparked a nuclear crisis at a power plant in which radiation leaked into the surrounding environment, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents and leading to ongoing fears over contaminated food.

Abdullah Koni, the captain of Asian champions Al Sadd, said: "I'm from Senegal so I remember that Japan helped us when we were in trouble.

"I?d like to give something in return and will do as much as I can on the pitch to achieve that."

Japan's aid to Senegal has included emergency assistance when floods affected hundreds of thousands in the west African country in 2005.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter dismissed concerns over radiation in Japan.

"There were some voices saying how can you play in a country that has been affected? They didn't speak so much about the tsunami but they spoke about radiation," he told press in the northeastern city of Matsushima on Saturday.

Taking the tournament of continental champions back to Japan was designed to help the Japanese people, he said.

The annual showpiece, in which Barcelona will be competing from Thursday, is being held away from the area of Japan worst affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Rep: Mercy Johnson is not blind

In the statement made available to us, Her publicist wrote: As at the time of writing this, blogspheres and entertainment industry is awashed with rumour that star actress, Mercy Johnson suffered blindness and experienced a terrible accident that led to her death. Rep: Mercy Johnson is not blind

This rumor has no resemblance or iota of truth. Mercy is on a movie location in Lagos and getting set for her trip to Australia in a matter of days.

After diligent investigation, we discovered the rumour started as a result of a publicity stunt initiated by producer of a movie where Mercy’s character lost an eye. Another part of the rumor was started by detractor whose only goal is pull MJ down by all means.

It is despicable to note that these rumors were strengthened by writers who did not crosscheck before posting on their blogs, platforms or newspapers. We decry this act of insensitivity and irresponsibility especially as it affects family, friends and fans.

We appreciate family, friends and fans that have taken time to call out of concern and love and we wish to let them know that mercy is hale and hearty.

We implore bloggers and writers to kindly cross check reports on mercy with us to avoid using their platforms to promote falsehood and abate inappropriate ‘’PR stunts’’ by those who want to sell their movies or those whose goal is to pull others down at all costs.

Amidst his frustration with his label Interscope, 50 Cent premieres a viral music video for "I Just Wanna", one of his songs from his newly-released mixtape "The Big 10". The G-Unit member, along with his homie Tony Yayo, enjoys the company of some fine-looking ladies in this clip.

Earlier in the day, Fiddy wrote, "Man interscope put out the single art saying its coming out on the 31st but its not coming out. I'm not putting my album out till we are all on the same page." He added, "These people are gonna make kill one of them. Now madonna's single is called GIRLS GONE WILD. This is some bull sh*t #SK."

"This is nuts to me. I try to do everything I can to keep my cool you know what? If they don't care I don't care I'm putting out a video now," he continued his rants. "In 15 min new 50cent f*ck it. Making music makes me feel good. I'm going to write while I'm mad. I always come up with something good #SK."

The single Fiddy's talking about is called "Girls Go Wild" which features Jeremih. It has a cover art which boasts an image of a voluptuous lady's backside. She's seen sweeping her long brunette locks to the side to reveal a face of blue-eyed tiger painted on her body.

50 Cent has been feuding with his label for quite a while now. Last summer, he was upset with how his new album promo was handled. "My whole career iv been doing sh** and they have been playing catch up this is the last f***ing album THEY BETTER WAKE UP AND WORK," the rapper wrote back then. "I worked really hard on this album I'm not gonna let it come out like some bullsh**."

Biography

by AceShowbiz.com
It was hard in his early life, but Curtis James Jackson III aka 50 Cent finally made it to become a renowned popular African American hip hop artist the world ever has. Born on July 6, 1975 in South Jamaica, Queens in New York, he grew up in a broken home family, his hustler mother Sabrina Jackson died when he was merely eight years old, while his father left the family, leaving his grandmother to parent him. Lost those closest to him at an early age and encouraged by his desire for things would drive him begun drug dealing at the age of twelve. Eventually encountered the law and began making visits to prison, 50 pursued his dream of becoming a heavyweight boxer, but finally fell back on rapping.

Took rapping seriously, it was in the mid '90s that the young man stayed away from crime and began making music. His break came soon thereafter upon meeting Jam Master Jay of Run DMC through a friend who instead of only taught him how to count bars, write choruses, and structure songs, passed over a tape of beats and asked him to rap over it. Got the man impressed, he was signed to his label, JMJ Records. Unfortunately, the deal didn't result much which prompted 50 to leave the label and quickly signed another deal with Columbia Records, thanks to the platinum selling producers Trackmasters who took noticed on his rapping skill. Began working on his debut album, he produced thirty-six songs in two and a half weeks, eighteen of which were included on his unofficially released album, "Power of the Dollar [Unreleased]" in 2000. A trio of singles preceded the album's proposed release, namely "Your Life's on the Line," "Thug Love" featuring Destiny's Child, and "How to Rob," in fact, contributed to 50's rising to popularity. The latter track, which lyrics detail how he would rob particular big-name rappers, attracted a lot of attention thus making it a hit. Shortly after the release of the single, on May 24, 2000, just before Columbia was set to release "Power of the Dollar [Unreleased]", he encountered a deadly incident on 161st Street in Jamaica, Queens when an assassin attempted to end his life, shooting him nine times with a 9mm pistol while he sat helpless in the passenger seat of a car. Spent thirteen days in recovery, he survived but Columbia Records decided to drop him, blacklisted him in the recording industry after finding out he had been shot, put "Power of the Dollar [Unreleased]" to shelve.

Hard for him to find a studio to work with in the US during the two following years, 50 Cent headed for Canada. With the help from his business partner Sha Money XL, he made a return to the rap underground, began recording over thirty songs for mixtapes and formed a hip hop group G-Unit, featuring Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, and Tony Yayo, with the intention to set up a solid career in the industry. Together they produced large quantities of tracks, some of which featured the companions rapping over popular beats, while the others mocked popular rappers, and had them compiled on "Guess Who's Back?" in 2002. Much to their surprise, the mixtape garnered industry attention as well as street esteem, particularly popular rapper Eminem who declared on a radio show his admiration for 50 Cent. And amidst a bidding war that followed, Em indeed got him signed to his and Dr. Dre's Shady/Aftermath label.

George Takei: 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars' Fans Should Unite to Fight 'Twilight'

George Takei: 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars' Fans Should Unite to Fight 'Twilight'
See larger image
George Takei has taken an initiative to end the long-running dispute between "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" fans. The actor playing Hikaru Sulu on the original "Star Trek" TV series recently released a video urging both franchises' stars, William Shatner and Carrie Fisher, to call a truce, and declaring "Twilight Saga" as the real common enemy.

"What's needed today, now, more than ever, is 'Star Peace' for there is an ominous, mutual threat to all science fiction. It's called 'Twilight'. And it is really, really bad," said the 74-year-old. "Gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie, or epic battle. In its place we have vampires that sparkle, moan and go to high school."

Takei continued, "Now, I'm not above mixing in a little sex appeal to spice up the fantasy. But sci-fi fans be warned, there are no great stories, characters or profound life lessons to be found in 'Twilight'...In 'Twilight', the only message that rings through loud and clear is: 'Does my boyfriend like me?' "

Shatner, who plays Captain Kirk on the original "Star Trek" series, previously ignited the feud between fans of both franchises on a reality show called "The Shatner Project". Saying that "Star Wars" was derivative of "Star Trek", he claimed, " 'Star Trek' has relationships, and conflict among the relationships, and stories with philosophical questions which dramatizes it. 'Star Wars' was special effects, was ILM at its best."

Shatner's comment drew strong reaction from Fisher, who is famous for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. She quickly struck back by saying that her "space buns" was far more superior than Mr. Spock's ears and that Klingon "just sounds like a laundry detergent."

Chris Pratt might hunt down notorious terrorist Osama Bin Ladin in his next movie. Twitch reported that the "Moneyball" actor is in talks to tackle the lead role in director Kathryn Bigelow's yet-to-be titled true life action drama about the U.S.'s hunt of Bin Laden.

Previously, Joel Edgerton was eyed for the lead role before he turned down the offer due to scheduling conflict. Should Pratt sign to the project, he will join Jason Clarke who has been cast for an undisclosed role. A number of actors have also been rumored to be offered the supporting roles. They include Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Jennifer Ehle.

The movie about bin Laden raid was previously developed under the working title "Kill Bin Laden", but it is currently untitled. Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal have been working on the project even before the al Qaeda leader was murdered in a massive attack by the U.S. army in Abbottabad, Pakistan last May.

After being long delayed, the based-on-true-story drama is set to kick off the production in February 2012. It is expected to open in theaters across the U.S. on December 19, 2012.

Angelina Jolie: 'I don't have a lot of friends'

It probably isn't the easiest thing in the world, having six kids, a career that takes you all over the globe and looks that might be intimidating to the other moms at school drop-off. Which might be why Angelina Jolie's admission that she doesn't have a ton of girlfriends might not qualify as shocking news.
The actress, currently doing press to promote her directorial debut, "In the Land of Blood and Honey" told Marie Clare, "Well, I have a few girlfriends. I just ... I stay at home a lot. I don't do a lot with them, and I'm very homebound."
That's not to say that Jolie has no one to talk to: her slightly famous husband Brad Pitt serves as her primary sounding board. "I talk to my family," she says. "I talk to Brad ... But I don't know, I don't have a lot of friends I talk to. He really is the only person I talk to."

NETPod: Wande Coal Makes Return With 3 New Singles

After  starving his fans for three long years, one of Nigeria’s best pop singers and hook carriers, Wande Coal is back!
Much has been said since the chubby-looking singer who slightly went off the grid-  speculations about him leaving the Mo’Hits camp, battling drugs and alleged naked pictures surfacing online.
His music, style and melody have certainly been missed, not even a bunch of cameos with his Mo’Hits crew mates and other pop acts like Wizkid could satisfy the thirst for his music from fans and critics alike.
Returning with three new singles, Wande packs a power punch; ‘Go low‘ is a customary ‘Wande’ track. High tempo synths and strong congas while he creatively spins around the bass drums.
‘Been long you saw me‘ follows suit, Wande talks about his absence and advises everyone to get their groove on.
‘Private trips‘ takes on another route. Laced with a crunk sound, the tempo suggest a more laid back feel…

How Rita Dominic emerged Arik Airline Best Actress

Was Rita Dominic desperate to win the newly instituted Arik Airline Awards category for Best Actress at the just concluded African International Film Festival(AFRIFF), or was it just providence?
Recall  that  Dominic accused Ini Edo of  manipulating the online voting result which led to the cancellation of the exercise, a week before the festival kicked off in Lagos.
But in a twist of fate, last weekend, the actress eventually emerged the winner of the same award.

However, she won the award not by voting, instead through a lucky dip conducted by former Miss World, Agbani Darego.
At last weekend’s  AFRIFF awards night held at Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos, BBA regular host  IK Osakioduwa  who anchored the glamorous event with Rita Dominic had called out the  ex-beauty queen, all for the purpose of selecting a winner of the award through lucky dip.  After all said and done, Rita Dominic emerged the lucky winner beating Stephanie Okereke, Omoni Oboli, Genevieve Nnaji and others who were also nominated for the award. But Ini Edo’s name was conspicuously missing during the lucky dip.
Interestingly, this happened to be the first time, where a winner would emerge in an international contest of this magnitude through lucky dip.  But for IK, the organisers decided to adopt that means as the sponsors insisted on  giving out the award to a winner, no matter the odds.
By winning the award, Rita Dominic will be flown to the Tribeca Film Festival, billed to hold in New York next year, by Arik Airline.
Apart from the Best Actress award, there were also winners in other categories of indigenous awards instituted by  the airline. They were ace-film maker, Mahmood Ali-Balogun, whose “Tango with Me” remains one of the best movies ever shot by a Nigerian, won the Best Producer of the Year, and actor Desmond Elliot who won the Best actor award.
Kenyan Jane Murago-Munene’s “The Unbroken Spirit”won the Best Documentary category while Le Parrian by Pale Sie Lazare won in the area of Best Animation.
The Viewers’ choice award, awarded in terms of feedback of the audience concerning movie screened in the course of the festival, went to The Education of Auma Obama while Niji Akanni’s Aramotu  lift the country at the event by winning the Best Feature Film prize,  considered to be the most coveted award of the whole lot.
The film beat such films as Lancelot Imasuen’s epic film “Ädesuwa’, “Better Mus Come’by a Jamaican  director, Storm Saulter, “Elza’s Happiness” directed by Marietter Monpierre from France amongst other films to cliche the prize.
The awards night was graced by a galaxy of celebrities across the world who dressed to kill. Mostly Nollywood super  actors and actresses were the cynosure of attraction at the event. Kate Henshaw, Genevieve Nnaji, Stephanie Okereke, Omoni Oboli, Ini Edo, Monalisa China, Nse Etim Ipe, Rita Dominic, Omoni Oboli, Uche Nnanna, Amaka Igwe, Celine Loaderand, Desmond Elliot, Kunle Afolayan, OC Ikeje, and a host of others.

Inside Obama's re-election math

President Barack Obama makes his way onto the stage to speak on payroll tax cuts this week in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Washington (CNN) -- As President Barack Obama wraps up his eighth trip this year to Pennsylvania, some political insiders say he can't sell his brand in the Keystone State. The region's white, blue-collar voters, they say, have tuned him out.
So why, then, was he in Scranton this week pushing the payroll tax cut?
It may be that, despite the conventional wisdom, the Obama re-election campaign has a different, larger strategy quietly developing. They know that the 2012 election will likely be decided by a razor-thin margin. It will be a battle for every vote.
Obama challenges Republicans on payroll tax cut
With less than a year before Election Day and having raised more than $100 million, the Obama campaign believes it has the time and the money to compete in the dozen or so traditional battleground states as well as take on a few new states it feels have been put into play since 2007.
Now, Team Obama is focused on finding multiple ways to get to 270 electoral votes.
The path to 270
First, the president is aiming to win all the states John Kerry won in 2004. That would bring him to 246 electoral votes, including Pennsylvania's mother lode of 20. Add New Mexico, which the president won in 2008, and that's five more electoral votes. Now he's at 251.
Then it gets hard. The final 19 electoral votes would come through a process of mix and match.
The scenario getting the most buzz inside the beltway: locking in Virginia (13 electoral votes) and North Carolina (15 electoral votes) which would get him to 279.
Democratic operatives like the demographics of these states because they see an influx of the young, highly educated workers who tended to be Obama voters in 2008.
But some Republicans doubt Obama can take North Carolina, in particular, pointing to its high unemployment rate -- currently around 10.4%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics -- and voting history: Obama won the state by only 14,000 votes in 2008 (or 1%), and it went for the Republican candidate in seven out of the past eight elections. Before Obama, Jimmy Carter in 1976 was the last Democrat to win North Carolina.
A win in Florida, with its 29 electoral votes, would also do the trick. But if Florida's popular junior Sen. Marco Rubio is on the Republican ticket, the state could suddenly be out of reach. Even without Rubio, it will be a tough battleground state.
There are other paths to the 19 electoral votes they need.
Ohio has 18 electoral votes (yes, they still plan to campaign there), plus any of these other states: Nevada (6), Iowa (6), Colorado (9) or even Arizona (11), which, thanks to its growing Latino population, could now be in play.
Back to Pennsylvania
But Republicans won't simply roll over in those states, especially in Pennsylvania. They have success in the last midterm elections to build on.
In 2010, Republican Pat Toomey won the open U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania. Republicans also picked up five new House seats and took over the governor's mansion in the last election.
So now, top Republicans say that with the president's approval rating down to 44% in Pennsylvania, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll, coupled with his early struggle to win in the western part of the state against Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primaries, they may actually have a shot at taking the traditionally Democratic state in 2012.
But Democrats argue that they'll hold those 20 electoral votes for three reasons:
Obama: Campaigner in chief?
Carney: President operates by the book
JKUSA: Obama and blue collar voters
1. They have a 1 million-plus advantage among registered voters.
2. Turnout for the midterms was so low -- around 41% -- it wasn't necessarily a true reflection of voter sentiment.
3. In 2008, the president won the state by more than 10 points, making it likely, in their view, that he can at least eke out a victory this time.

Meanwhile, Republicans also plan on fighting for the Kerry states of Wisconsin and Michigan.
However, the Obama team has alternate routes to 270 if they lose some of the Kerry states.
For example, if he loses Pennsylvania -- which would take him down to 226 -- but wins North Carolina (15), Virginia (13) and Colorado (9), and adds two of the following three states -- Iowa (6), New Mexico (5), Nevada (6) -- he crosses 270.
Or he could lose Pennsylvania -- down to 226 -- and Wisconsin -- down to 216 -- but pick up Florida (29), North Carolina (15) and Virginia (13) and he crosses the finish line. Add Ohio (18) and Arizona (11) to the list of options and the possibilities grow.
Of course one wonders whether the president could sweep other battleground states if he can't prevail in Pennsylvania and hold the Kerry map.
Any road map to victory requires one big dose of reality: The president will have to fight hard to win votes in any battleground state, old or new, given the state of the economy.

Melissa McCarthy: My body is a 'work in progress'

(PEOPLE.com) -- It's been a banner year for Melissa McCarthy professionally, but there's one thing the "Bridesmaids" star and recent "Saturday Night Live" host is still struggling with: her weight.
"I've been up and down," McCarthy, 41, tells Anderson Cooper during an appearance on Cooper's daytime talk show, "Anderson," which aired on Monday. "I've been much thinner since my second baby. I'm still working on it. It's a work in progress."
McCarthy, who's launching her own plus-size fashion line, says she'd love to be more svelte but recognizes the effort required.
"I hope I wake up at, like, 94 pounds," she quips. "But I don't think that's going to happen."
But, the Emmy winner adds, her main focus is her family, not conforming to Hollywood's typical beauty standards.
"There's so many other things to worry about," McCarthy says. "I still worry about it, but I think, my kids are healthy, I've got a great husband, and I go to work every day and do what I want."
"I'll keep working on [my body]," she says. "I just can't put any time to worrying about it."

First Hydrocarbon buys oil block worth $147 m

LAGOS (AFP) – A Nigerian firm backed by British company Afren announced on Thursday it has bought a major stake in an onshore oil block from Shell, Total and Agip at a cost of $147.5 million.
The deal long in the works sees First Hydrocarbon Nigeria Limited take a 45 percent stake in the block currently producing some 6,000 barrels per day. The company plans to boost that to 40,000 bpd in four years and eventually 50,000.
“FHN has today announced the completion of its acquisition of a 45 percent interest in OML 26 from SPDC, Total and Agip,” a statement said. SPDC is Shell’s local joint venture, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria.
“The announcement follows the agreement signed in October 2010 and the receipt of all necessary government and customary approvals.”
The remaining 55 percent is owned by Nigeria’s state oil firm, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. FHN will partner with the state firm’s exploration and production arm.
Shell, which had been the operator of the block and is historically the largest producer in Nigeria, has been seeking to sell off its share in a number of onshore blocks viewed as marginal.
Analysts say the moves appear to indicate a willingness by Shell to shift more of its focus offshore, where the risks of sabotage and militant attacks are lower.
Pipelines are regularly damaged by oil thieves seeking crude to sell on the black market, while militants claiming to be fighting on behalf of impoverished communities have carried out scores of attacks on facilities.
While militant-related violence has sharply declined since a 2009 amnesty deal, oil theft is believed to be on the rise.
Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, has been pushing for more local involvement in the country’s petroleum industry. The country currently produces more than two million barrels per day.
Afren holds a 45 percent stake in FHN, which it established with the support of Nigerian banks First City Monument and Guaranty Trust.

Solar aircraft a look into the future of flight?

Brooklyn, New York (Motherboard.tv) -- It can't be very hard for Bertrand Piccard to explain to his family why he wants to fly around the world with only sunlight for fuel.
In the 1930s, his grandfather, physicist and inventor Auguste Piccard, applied his excitement and interest in ballooning to designing a high-flying balloon attached to a pressurized aluminum gondola. The first of its kind, Auguste's flying machine completed a record-breaking climb more than 50,000 feet into the air, gathering valuable data about the Earth's upper atmosphere along the way.
Fitting that Bertrand, for what it's worth, defeated the notorious Sir Richard Branson by becoming the first man to circumnavigate the globe in a balloon in 1999.
His grandfather's pioneering principles of balloon technology were eventually applied to allow descent into the deep ocean, which informed the work of his father, Jacques Piccard, an oceanographer and engineer who made history in 1960 as part of the first and only manned exploration of the Challenger Deep, the deepest place in the ocean.
The work of his family would provide the vision -- and the name -- for Gene Roddenberry's Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who would seem to exercise some influence over the real Piccard too. Bertrand's enthusiasm for adventure, morally sound intuition and haircut seem directly taken from Roddenberry's description of the fictional spaceship captain.
Bertrand believes that as much as the world is locked into short term ways of thinking, there are positive and optimistic solutions that are profitable, protect the environment, create jobs and help economic growth. To fulfill his own vision, Bertrand has applied his and his family's pioneering spirit and brilliance to develop Solar Impulse, a solar-powered long-range glider to fly around the world and to harness an unlimited form of renewable energy using technologies that won't contribute to daunting environmental concerns. Think of him as Icarus in reverse.
Watch the rest of Solar Plane at Motherboard.tv
Bertrand's dream is already coming to fruition. Last July, the Solar Impulse became the first solar-powered airplane ever to fly through a complete daylight cycle. The goal is to one day be able to develop a solar plane capable of carrying multiple passengers, but don't try to book a flight just yet. Andre Borschberg, who's been working with Bertrand since 2003, says that while it's possible to make it around the world with one person on board the Solar Impulse now, "it will take more time for new technologies to allow passengers to fly without [creating] any pollution."
With a more than 200-foot wingspan and weighing in at less than 4000 pounds -- the weight of a mid-sized car -- the Solar Impulse has been designed entirely with energy conservation in mind. In fact, the remarkably resourceful aircraft uses roughly the same amount of energy that the Wright brothers' illustrious flying machine required to power in 1903.
Its state of the art propulsion system is made up of four motors containing polymer lithium batteries and a heat management system designed to conserve heat at high altitudes. Coupled with an onboard computing system that gathers and analyzes flight management procedures, the Solar Impulse's likeness to the Wright Flyer is only superficial. It's hard to imagine what the look on Orville and Wilbur's faces would be if only they could see what their design has inspired.
In the sixth episode of Motherboard's Upgrade! series, we travel back to Geneva, Switzerland, to talk to Bertrand about his vision for Solar Impulse, the impact it could have on the world and why, if we can't think and act sustainably, generations to come will be forced to face the growing dilemma our current way of life is creating in our increasingly fragile environment.

Three Months After Marriage, Mercy Johnson Goes Blind…

That's what News of the people is reporting.
Here is the full story.
Sultry actress Mercy Johnson is no doubt a woman that cannot be toyed with in the Nollywood when the names of who is who in the Nigerian movie industry or even in the world for that matter are mentioned.
This is based on the agility she applies to her craft to dish out what she knows how to do best, which has untimately made her a celebrity to reckon with, but that is not the story for today. The one now is very disheartening if not unpalatable.
Not too long ago, precisely August 28 2011,the actress was in the news, putting an end to a conflicting story which emanated at a scene on the he above mentioned date. But this time,it might definitely not be the best of time for the Kogi State born diva,Mercy Johnson as the news you are about to read may sound bizarre.
Undoubtedly,Mercy Johnson is one of the best actresses in Nigeria who has carved a nitche for herself before her much publicized marriage to Edo-born prince,Odi,which might not even confuse one whenever she is being link to several scandals.
According to the information,Mercy Johnson was said to have engaged in a combat on a movie location in Asaba Delta State, with a colleague whose name has not been revealed to us.The brawl,we gathered, made her to lose one of her eye balls in the ensuing brouhaha.
Information from other sources however claimed that ever since the unfortunate incident, newly wedded Mercy Johnson has found herself pitiable in the unbelievable situation,as her family members have been running helter-skelter to ensure a surgical operation for her in London,so that the eye can at least return to a manageable state as the damage done to the right eye is very gory.
On the heels of this,we placed repeated and anxious calls to Mercy to know the truth of the matter before going to press, but our efforts proved abortive as her phone kept ringing without response.
But before the temper of you lovers of Mercy begin to palpitate, let's quickly tell you that the flick we are referring to was written by Micheal Jaja, continuity by Prince Apex, costuming by Chioma Okafor,props/set by David Aginwa(Ghana) make-up by Gabazzini, managed by Boniface Ogbonnaya, produced by Magic Movies, and finally directed by Micheal Jaja.
