Marvel Studios may be close to lock a director for "Guardians of the Galaxy". James Gunn is said to be in talks with the studio to tackle the helming duty for the upcoming superhero intergalactic space movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter which first reported the news, the studio is attracted to Gunn's "sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror." Another filmmaker Joss Whedon shows the same quality in Marvel's recent blockbuster "The Avengers".

Though Marvel has landed its choice in Gunn, it reportedly also lists Peyton Reed and director duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden in the mix of possible helmers if the negotiations with the "Slither" and "Super" director do not lead to a deal. The company, however, declines request for comment on the issue.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is a far-future story revolving around a group of alien beings - each the last of their kind - who eventually travel back in time to protect the earth from alien invasion. Chris McCoy is hired to rewrite the script. The action sci-fi movie is scheduled for an August 1, 2014 U.S. release, but no actor has been cast as of now.
